More broadly speaking, a timing belt refers to a flat belt with internal teeth. But exactly speaking, a timing belt is one part of automobile engines, especially internal combustion engines.
An automotive timing belt functions to control the timing of engine valves, that is, to control the opening and closing of engine's valves as per engine's requirement. For example, in a four-stroke engine, a timing belt can control the valves and make them open and close once every other revolution of the crankshaft. However, the function of timing belts varying in accordance with the design of engines. Sometimes an automotive timing belt may also be used for driving engine's water pump and oil pump.
